NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated the new campus of Nalanda University in Rajgir, Bihar. The new campus of the university will be set up close to ancient ruins of the university.
PM Modi also watched the ruins of ancient Nalanda University before inaugurating the new campus.
Nalanda University, founded in the 5th century, was a magnet for scholars from across the globe. The historic institution thrived for eight centuries until it was ravaged by invaders in the 12th century. The site was declared a UN Heritage Site in 2016.
**1. Introduction**
The new Nalanda University campus integrates traditional and modern architecture across 455 acres, featuring a Net Zero area and 100 acres of water bodies.
**2. Establishment**
In 2007, the initiative to establish the university was spurred by a suggestion from former president APJ Abdul Kalam. Formally established in 2010 via a special Act of Parliament, it covers 455 acres allocated by the government.
**3. Campus Development**
Operations began in 2014 at a temporary location with 14 students. Construction of the permanent campus in Pilkhi village started in 2017.
